David (Owen) Hodgson has a highly unusual breadth and depth of skills and interests, spanning art and technology, and including engineering, programming, writing, graphics, transport and natural history.

Professionally, he obtained the BSEE and ACGI degrees in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Imperial College, London, while also studying Illustration part-time at St. Martins School of Art. After graduating, he began his career as a broadcast engineer at the BBC. He then moved into private industry, including work at Sony’s Advanced Video Technology Center, where he developed hardware and software for innovative video products. His work at Sony, and subsequently for other companies, earned him several US and Japanese patents.

After starting his own business with the creation of some early multimedia products, David also consulted for other clients, expanding his skills from video through multimedia and computer security. (For details of all patents, and links to the text, see Patents.) He has also produced professional graphics designs.

David was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, Great Britain, where he grew up. He then lived briefly in Coventry, Manchester, London, Croydon and Andover, before making a job-related move to California, USA in 1987. He has now lived permanently in California for a greater portion of his life than he spent in Britain.

David lives in Santa Rosa, California, with his wife of 31 years, and several cats.
